  • Before You Begin

  • This award is available to graduating Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) seniors who will be the first in their immediate families to go to college, and are accepted into two or four-year colleges. Preference will be given to students who are (or have been) in foster care, homeless, undocumented and/or LGBTQ (system-involved youth applicants also encouraged to apply). Applicants must have a record of service to and participation in school and/or community-based organizations.

    BEFORE COMPLETING ONLINE APPLICATION, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS READY TO UPLOAD:

    1. Your two to three paragraph essay (between 400 – 700 words) on the following topic: Humanism is based on the belief that every human being should be treated equally regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and disability status. Human beings, not gods, are solely responsible for creating social change. Why do you identify as non-religious/secular and what issue(s) are you passionate about addressing in your community? How might Humanism make a positive difference in creating social change?
    2. A letter of recommendation from an advisor/teacher. (You can attach a separate page listing your participation in school and/or community-based organizations if this is not included in your advisor/teacher letter.
    3. A copy of your Admission letter to your 2 or 4 year college
